PatientIndia is an effort to provide day-to-day information required by the common Indian patient to reduce cost of healthcare without compromising quality.
In our views, the costs go up because of 3 main reasons:
-
Prices of medicines do vary a lot from company to company. But those prices are not listed in a database readily accessible by the patients. Therefore, patients (especially chronic cases) cannot take advantage of these price differences. And, for doctors it is impossible to remember so many prices. In some countries doctors write only the generic names in the prescription. It is the responsibility of the retailer to offer comparative prices. Final decision comes from the patients - whether to go for an expensive brand or the cheaper alternatives. Unfortunately, in our country such a responsibility is nobody’s business. In our ‘Compare’ section we have tried to give a massive database in a searchable manner. We request every patient to go back to the doctor with options found on our database and ask whether any of those could be taken. Many company’s products have advantages of proprietary technology, novel quality standards etc. Those are regularly communicated by these companies to the doctors. So, let the doctor take the final call.
-
Cost of healthcare also goes up because proper education is not given to patients about their diseases and especially do’s and don’ts associated with every ailment. Very few patients understand properly what their disease actually is, how it happened, what are the risks, why is it absolutely important to adhere to the doctors’ instructions, etc. etc. In our ‘Read’ sections we are going to give articles that are written by experienced medical writers in as much simple language as possible. They will give a good overview of the diseases. We intend to add newer articles regularly.
-
Thirdly, patients cannot find the information in order to go to the right doctor in the very beginning. Main constraint for this is lack of proper directory services. It is so much important to find out the right doctor in the place where the patient is located at the required time. Same with hospitals, nursing homes and blood banks etc. We are giving such information in our ‘Find’ section. We have started with quite inadequate information. In many cities you will not find good enough numbers. Many good doctors have not been captured in our database. We will add records as quickly as possible.

Our attempt is to do as much as possible within our limited resources to sort the aforesaid problems of common Indian patients. We need every visitor’s help to make this project a success. In association with SEWA Charitable Foundation we are running a project to take the content of PatientIndia to elderly patients and non-users of internet through print. Please donate to this project.
We are committed to make life easier for ordinary Indian patient. It is an ongoing process of improvement and enrichment that will make this portal a national asset.
We understand that many of our visitors will find it difficult to navigate through a complex website. So, we have tried our best to put a very simple viewer interface in front of our robust backend that powers the searches. We would like to have feedbacks on the ease of usage. Please come forward and suggest any changes. We would love to incorporate as many of those as possible. We intend to create a bonding with patients by being available there 24 hours all over India. Therefore, very good servers have been used. If there are still any problems with accessibility inform us immediately. We will take care of it.
